How to > Style your herb container garden

Keeping herbs indoors won't only prove to be handy, it could also be a fantastic way to beautify your kitchen. To follow up with our workshop series on herbs gardens, here's a simple step by step tutorial on how to create a cute and fragrant "by-the-kitchen-sink" of your own. Enjoy!

What you'll need :

- a cute container!
We love our ridged zinc container (available at the shop right now, come take a look!). It's the perfect size, simplistic and functional. But Any cache-pot of your liking will do.
"If you consider keeping your garden indoors", says Donna Brock, at The Vine Garden Market in Saint Simons Island, "you might want to select a vessel without draining holes so that it can't damage furniture with water stains."
Don't worry, we're going to show the trick on how to avoid to oversaturate your plants with water also...!

- a plastic or garbage bag for lining

- some styrofoam peanuts or a big piece to be cut in smaller pieces

- potting soil

- 4" pots of aromatic herbs, amongs our favorites are : rosemary, marjoram, parsley, cilantro, mint, basil, tarragon, thyme, oregano, lavender...
You can also vary and add a splash of color if you room with a non Aromatic annual, like Pentas or Blue Daze.

- mood moss

#1. Lining your container

Line your container with the garbage bag cut 2" above the edges and add a 2" layer of styrofoam pieces at the bottom. Yes, you guessed it right, this is the famous trick we talked about. This light layer will act as your filtration system, allowing the freshly watered potting soil to drain but without the container to drip water all over the place.

#2. Compose your garden

Start with a layer of potting soil on top of your styrofoam. You want at least 2". Then remove your plants from their 4"plastic pots and losen the root ball. It will help the plant to get established faster.

You can "crowd" your aromatic plants or opt for a more simple duo or trio. Play around until your satisfied for the look of your garden.

#3. Moss it up!

Mood moss will tie the look. The trick is to "pack" the moss around the base of your plants, directly on top of your soil. You want to saturate your moss with water before hand though : submerge a big piece in water and squeeze the excess out like you would with a sponge. Then your moss is hydrated and ready to be "planted". Mood moss will make your container really look like a work of art and will also prevent moisture from evaporating too fast, so less watering!

#4. Accessorize!

This last step is totally optional but makes it so much and adorable!
We love out little chalkboard garden markers ! Also to check out : the watering bulb!

Fill it with water and just stick right in the middle of your container : your garden is now almost self sufficient, the watering glass dripping just as the plants need to drink!
Available at The Vine Garden Market!

Voila!
